KaiWaka Community Tree Planting & BBQ Day at Boundary

Our collective Waka Tu Waka Ora at our shared space at 41 Boundary Road, Clover Park, came together to host a very first Neighbour’s day with Community Fruit tree planting and a yummy shared BBQ.

PVA were privileged to have won an orchard bundle giveaway from Kōanga Institute to kickstart our dreams of a Community Food Forest. From this we were able to plant Blackcurrants, 2 types of Redcurrants, Peach, Golden delicious and Freyburg apples, and also a Stella dwarf Cherry tree. Knowing the whakapapa of these trees makes these initial plantings in this space very special as knowing where they are from is important for us to be able to connect to the trees on a deeper level and to our ancestors.

On this Full moon and overcast morning, absolutely perfect for planting, we also dug in the generous Feijoa, Lemon and the tropical Hibiscus as well as the ancient aute plant which our ancestors used to beat to make tapa. All tucked in nicely with our very own compost, made onsite.

We were able to meet some of our awesome neighbours in the hood over cups of tea and korero, give them a tour of our gardens, compost and vision, and share coriander, pepino and oregano seedlings grown in our very own Ko’anga nursery.

Cuppa tea and kōrero with our neighbour under the Pōhutukawa tree.

It was nice to hear about what our neighbours are up to, what attracted them to visit and what they are growing in their own backyards and possibly what we can trade in the future to keep growing this community space but also help our neighbours with what they’d like growing in their own homes.

We even got a visit from Lorenzo Kaisara - Community server and connector who was eager to know more about KaiWaka and captured us on video.

Scott and Titi from S Double S Services from WTWO collective had their garage open and bikes out, and had many come through for pre-loved bikes and repairs.

We ended off the hard mahi and yapping with a yummy BBQ supplied by our community partners Roots Creative and it was smiles all around.
